Malaysia FA bans cigarette football sponsorship

Malaysia's state-based Malacca Football Association will not be allowed to use a cigarette company as sponsor for the 2006-2007 season. Football Association of Malaysia Competitions Committee Chairman, Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar, told Xinhua newsagency the decision was based on a directive of the federal government as well as that of the World Health Organisation that cigarette companies cannot be involved in football sponsorship.

"The directive does not come from the FAM but rather from the government and WHO, so we will just have to abide by that ruling. As such we have advised the Malacca FA to look for an alternative sponsor instead," he said. Malacca was promoted to the Super League after emerging Group B winners in the Premier League last season.
