Bin Hammam warns against bogus naturalisations

Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed Bin Hammam has again advised against short-term thinking in player development by stressing the importance of following FIFA rules on naturalisation of players. In an interview with Qatar-based Al Kass Sports Channel, Bin Hammam pointed to western Asian countries which have been heavily recruiting and naturalising foreign players and said such signings should be looked at "from a broader perspective” than just improving teams.

“All West Asian countries, without exception, have been granting citizenships to specialists in different professions and this is logical. But, my worry is the treatment of a player like a mercenary, giving him temporary travel documents for one or two matches and when the job is over his services are no more needed ... A naturalised player should be a full-fledged citizen and for me that’s true naturalisation,” added Bin Hammam.
